Merrill Jean Roberts, a beloved member of her family and community, passed away peacefully at her home on October 20, 2025, surrounded by those she cherished most. Born on November 25, 1932, in Louisville, Kentucky, Merrill lived a life rich in faith, love, and unwavering integrity.
Merrill dedicated many years of her career as an Instructional Assistant for Bullitt County Public Schools, where she touched the lives of countless students, encouraging and supporting them in their educational journeys. A proud Christian woman, Merrill demonstrated her devotion to her faith through her active involvement in her church community. She was a member of Little Flock Baptist Church and regularly attended services at Vine Hill Baptist Church, where she loved her church family and passionately spread God's word and love.
Her hobbies and interests reflected her vibrant spirit; she remained knowledgeable about world affairs and held a deep passion for politics. Merrill had a particular fondness for good meals, especially those made with home-grown tomatoes. Throughout her life, she held a special affection for animals, particularly cats, embodying her compassionate and giving nature.
As a woman of strong morals and resolute beliefs, Merrill was not only a devoted mother and grandmother but also a matriarch who instilled discipline and determination in those around her. She was supportive of her family, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and aspirations. Her selflessness extended beyond her family, as she consistently offered help to others in need, including animals.
Merrill is survived by her loving daughter, Melanie Jean Roberts; her son, John Mark Roberts, and his wife Brenda; her grandchildren, Kim and Kevin Gathof, Jessica and Jason Ryan, and Joshua Roberts; and her cherished great-grandchildren, Michael and Matthew Gathof, Hank Griffin, Heidi Ryan, Corley and Lucy Bain, and Tyler Ryan.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sherman Clifford Roberts, who passed away in 1997, and her parents Maudie Mathis and Cecil Cundiff. She also mourned the loss of her brother, Billy Neal Cundiff.
Merrill Jean Roberts leaves behind a rich legacy of love, faith, and community service. Her strength, kindness, and dedication will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing her.
A private burial is to take place in Highland Memory Gardens.
The family will be hosting a Celebration of Life as a tribute to Merrill at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made in Merrill’s honor to the Bullitt County Animal Shelter.
