Melvin Gene Yankey, a cherished member of the community, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on July 13, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on April 6, 1941, in Washington County, Kentucky, Melvin was known for his charismatic personality and his unwavering dedication to those around him.
As the owner/operator of Yankey Masonry, Melvin was meticulous in his craft and took immense pride in his work. His reputation for excellence was well-known, and he was respected by colleagues and clients alike. While Melvin once lived a wilder lifestyle, he later credited his acceptance of God as his savior with saving his life. This transformative experience brought him a profound sense of peace and community connection that he embraced wholeheartedly.
Melvin's presence was always felt as he was loud and full of excitement, greeting everyone with a broad smile. He was a loving father, grandfather, and friend, who opened his heart to all. His love for animals and his genuine care for others further endeared him to the community, where he was known and well-liked by many.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Dolly Coomes; stepsons Tony Parsley (Tracy), William Whiteside (Sally), and Skeeter Whiteside (Sherry); brother William Truman Yankey; sister Dorothy Gail Beckman; grandson Kevin Yankey (Kalynn); granddaughters Sabrina Yankey and Lisa Wood; and great-grandchildren Hunter, Michael, Warren, Leighton, Brylen, Zeanna, and Levi. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, extended family, and countless friends who will dearly miss him.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy Webb and James Yankey; his son, Mark Yankey; and his brother, Louis Allen Yankey.
Visitation for Melvin Gene Yankey will be held at Maraman Billings Funeral Home. Visitation will take place on July 17, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a second visitation on July 18, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM officiated by Bro. Justin Anderson, concluding with burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Lisa Wood for her commitment to Melvin’s care and her never-ending support during his time of need. Melvin's legacy of service, love, and laughter will continue to be remembered and celebrated by all who knew him.
