Throughout her life, Mary was known for her warm spirit and many passions. She found joy in caring for animals, especially her treasured cats, Buddas and Cocoa. A devoted lover of country music and an avid reader of her Bible, she nurtured a soul rich in faith and compassion. Her hobbies included collecting dolls, a pastime that brought her comfort and fond memories, and above all, she treasured the time spent with her family.
Mary shared a loving marriage of over 44 years with her late husband, Irvin Leo Layer, Sr., whose memory she held close to her heart. Their union was a cornerstone of her life, marked by deep affection and partnership.
She is survived by her devoted daughters Angela Layer, Lisa Reitchmuth, and Lora Martin, who carry forward her legacy of kindness. Mary was a beloved sister to Ronnie, Donnie, Johnny, Robert Dale, Tommy Ray, Joe David, Mable, Wanda, Chris, Sue, and Alice, with whom she shared a special and enduring bond. Her family also includes treasured grandchildren Tiffany Layer, Sonya Layer, Samantha Bush, Charles Reitchmuth, and Jesse Martin, as well as great-grandchildren Makineze, Dallas, Navaeh, Charles Irvin, Madison, Hunter, Layne, and Lucy Joe. All were blessed by her presence and the gentle love she freely offered.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy Paul and Pauline Hodge; her sons, Steven Layer, John Layer, and Irvin Leo Layer, Jr.; and her brothers Bucky and William Lee Hodge and two infant twin sisters. Though deeply missed, their memories remain a vital part of Mary Ruth’s story.
