Mary E. Browning, affectionately nicknamed "Slugger" and "Smiley," passed away on February 8, 2026, at her residence. She was born on April 17, 1937, in Bardstown, Kentucky, where she began a life characterized by warmth, joy, and a deep connection to her faith and family.
A devoted member of the Baptist community, Mary was known for her beautiful smile and her love for singing, particularly her favorite hymn "I'll Fly Away." Her passion for country music, especially the tunes of George Jones, brought joy to her life and to those around her. Mary also cherished the simple pleasures of life, such as enjoying flowers, with a special fondness for chigger weed and engaging in spirited games of bingo.
Mary’s career included her impactful years at the old glass house during the 1960s and 1970s, where her dedication and hard work left a lasting impression.
She is survived by her loving family: her daughter Sheila Hines, her son Billy Browning, daughter Nori Underwood and spouse Frank, along with 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by her former husband, Eddie Lee Browning Sr., and several family members: her parents Palmer Mattingly and Mary Francis Fanny Curtsinger; her children Louise Hodge, Eddie Lee Browning Jr., Barbara Ann Browning, Chester "Eugene" Browning and WT Browning; her brothers Wallace, William, Wilbur, and Palmer Jr.
In honor of Mary E. Browning, visitation will be held at Maraman Billings Funeral Home in Shepherdsville, on Friday, February 20, 2026, from 10:30am until the time of service at 1:00pm. Funeral Service to be officiated by Bro. Jesse Marshall, burial to follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Mary E. Browning will be remembered for her unwavering spirit, her endless kindness, and the light she brought into the lives of so many.
